The Oshima Prize goes to Oda Kaori! PFF presents a commemorative screening & talk event on 20th March in the presence of the winner, Sakamoto Ryuichi and Kurosawa Kiyoshi.

The Pia Film Festival (PFF) has been introducing self-produced films not only in Japan but also abroad since 1977. PFF now establishes a new cinema award, “Oshima Prize”.
【What is the Oshima Prize?】

Today, PFF announced Oda Kaori as the winner of the first Oshima Prize. Studied under Hungarian filmmaker Béla Tarr, she has created a unique cinematic language and made powerful works such as “Aragane”(2015) and “Cenote”(2019). The winner was chosen by the jury comprised of musician Sakamoto Ryuichi, the president of the jury, filmmaker Kurosawa Kiyoshi and Araki Keiko, PFF festival director.

<Biography of Oda Kaori>
Born in Osaka (Japan), 1987. Filmmaker/Artist. Through images and sounds, her works explore the memories of human beings. She studied in Sarajevo under the supervision of Hungarian filmmaker Béla Tarr. Her first full-length film, “Aragane” (2015), originated from that period. Shot in a Bosnian coal mine, the film has been screened at numerous festivals. Her latest film, Cenote (2019), which was shot in underwater caves in Yucatan Mexico, was selected in the Bright Future section at the International Film Festival Rotterdam 2020. It will be released in Japan in June 2020.

“Cenote”(2019) by Oda Kaori and “Cruel Story of Youth”(1960) by Oshima Nagisa (digitally remastered), will be screened with English subtitles. After the screening of “Cenote”, there will be a talk in the presence of Oda Kaori, Sakamoto Ryuichi and Kurosawa Kiyoshi (there's no English translation).

Cenotes—sources of water that in ancient Mayan civilization were said to connect the real world and the afterlife. The past and present of the people living in and around them intersect, and distant memories echo throughout immersive scenes of light and darkness. The director dived into underwater to shoot with super 8 camera and iPhone.

The groundbreaking second film directed by 28-year-old Oshima Nagisa that gave birth to the term "Shochiku New Wave”. The film has been digitally restored under the supervision of Kawamata Takashi, cameraman of Oshima Nagisa.
