Receiving a bizarre telegram announcing the death of his relative Terumichi, Masuo heads for a southern island. Along the way, memories of the Sakurada clan, ruled by his great-grandfather, resurface. The film was selected as the best film at the Best Ten Kinema Junpo 1971. Through the repetition of ceremonial rites, the film sharply exposes the “family system” binding postwar Japan.
